Economic climate survey: expatriate programs in these turbulent times

The state of the global economy is affecting almost every industry and area of business, and most organizations are reviewing their operations for cost-effectiveness. One area in particular that is being reviewed in the HR realm is international assignment programs. To gain insight on how current economic conditions are affecting international assignment programs, KPMG LLP in the U.S. surveyed over 100 organizations across several industries and countries during January and February 2009.
The survey results reveal that although international assignment program budgets are indeed among the areas that are being examined for cost-effectiveness, the majority of organizations have not yet made any major adjustments to their programs.

While approximately a quarter of participants expressed that assignees could be recalled or localized in the next 12 months, even fewer indicated that their policy provisions or the number of eligible positions would be reduced. Interestingly, only a marginal percentage of respondents advised that international assignments either have been or would be suspended.
