Dr. Sören Eichhorst, KPMG in Germany

With experience across a range of healthcare sectors, Sören brings together the different stakeholders to improve both quality and margins.

Transcript:

My name is Sören Eichhorst.

I’m a medical doctor by background, I have a special specialization in internal medicine. I have a post-doctoral qualification in molecular biology. After my medical career, I joined a consultancy and was as a medical consultant for six years. After that period I worked as a CEO for a private hospital in Germany. And I was not only CEO of the hospital but also medical director and regional director for the hospital chain. And joined KPMG last year, and I’m an expert for Quality and Margin Improvements, also for Lean Principles. And I’m also focusing on restructuring of care systems.

So from my perspective and what is primarily a European perspective, I think cost cutting is not the primary issue any more, but you need to focus on revenue generation for hospitals, so you need to make sure that you also get all the patients you need, and there are different tools on how you can achieve that, and they have proven to be quite successful, so that’s something you can do right there. You still need to concentrate, of course, on the cost basis but you also need to concentrate on the revenues for hospitals, and you also need to make sure that the quality is right, because a patient starts to think more and more about quality, the one key word here is consumerism you need to take into consideration. And for all that when you basically need to focus on quality of infrastructure, on quality of process, and on quality of outcome to achieve most for your clients.

What needs to happen in the long run, basically, is to redesign all the care processes so that the patient is in the middle of the care process, and in the end you achieve the best outcome with that. You need to focus on patients’ interests, patients’ demands, and that is probably the newest development in medicine right now.

Bridging the gap between medical and non-medical players

By successfully integrating health providers, pharmaceutical companies, insurance groups and other stakeholders, Sören has shown that it’s possible to improve both margins and quality. He is an advocate of patient-centered care, redesigning processes around patients to reflect the new ‘consumerism.’

After several years in clinical practice, Sören joined a healthcare management consultancy, working on numerous projects within Germany and internationally. He led the restructuring of a large public sector hospital group, reorganized the human resource planning for a German university hospital, and carried out strategic planning for a multinational pharmaceutical company.

As a consultant, Sören has also served clients in the health insurance sector. He supported the merger of two major German players, helped one firm to create an integrated network for the inpatient and outpatient sectors, and implemented a complete healthcare insurance system for an EU country.

Sören also spent time as Regional Director for a private German hospital chain, where he was also CEO and Medical Director of one of the hospital – the Eifelklinik St. Brigida hospital at Artemed Kliniken, where he led the reorganization of the hospital.

After studying medicine at the University of Göttingen and Heidelberg Medical Schools and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, he conducted basic research in tumor immunology and immunogenetics at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg. Sören completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University Hospital in Munich and holds a postdoctoral lecturer qualification.
