Education and mentoring
KPMG in the US and the UK offer two examples of projects they are involved with which they view to be of national priority. KPMG in the U.S. is the sole corporate sponsor of RBI, an outreach program for inner city children that increases participation in baseball and softball, and encourages academic achievement. In addition, they work with First Book, putting new books into the hands of underprivileged children. KPMG in the U.K. has provided £1 million of co-sponsorship to a new City Academy in London, a non-selective school which opened in 2009 and which will offer 900 places for 11–16 year olds. KPMG is also providing leadership and governance support to the Academy, advice for an ambitious social enterprise project, and staff and student mentors.
Pro bono professional services
KPMG firms provide a range of pro bono professional services to selected not-for-profit organisations. For example, KPMG in Bahrain and KPMG in Oman each provide over 1,000 hours services each year. In 2010 KPMG in Germany won the 'Germany – Land of Ideas' Award for its Social Marketplaces which it founded in 2006 with The Bertelsmann Foundation and RWE, enabling non-profit organisations to acquire pro bono professional services and other gift in kind donations from corporates.
Local and National Charities
A significant proportion of KPMG firms have set up independent charitable Foundations to which they provide regular financial funding. Also, many KPMG firms have a 'staff-selected' charity for which the firm embarks upon a calendar of fundraising and volunteering activities.
