Laird joined KPMG in 2005 after obtaining his Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. Laird began his career with KPMG in the Waterloo Audit practice working on clients in various industry groups including Consumer Markets and Energy and Natural Resources. Laird obtained his Chartered Accountancy (CA) designation in 2008.

 

In the summer of 2008, Laird participated in a four month secondment to Johannesburg as part of a short term exchange program with KPMG South Africa. Laird recently returned from a 36 month secondment to KPMG Amsterdam as part of the Global Opportunities program where he travelled extensively across Europe and Asia for clients gaining knowledge of IFRS.

 

While working with KPMG Canada, Laird has been involved with recruiting and most recently transitioned to the Talent Attraction Team as Manager of Campus Recruiting. Laird also maintains a client portfolio in the Enterprise practice with a focus on real estate. In his personal time Laird enjoys skiing, swimming and travelling.

Stephen Novalski joined KPMG in 2005 after obtaining his BBA from the Schulich School of Business. Stephen began his career with KPMG in the Financial Institutions and Real Estate (FIRE) Audit practice, where he gained experience working with a wide variety of clients and industries including banks, real estate and construction companies.

 

In 2008, Stephen obtained his Chartered Accountant (CA) designation and that same year accepted a secondment into KPMG's National Campus Recruiting team providing support for offices from coast to coast. This secondment led to a permanent move into Talent Attraction where Stephen joined as a Manager on the Employer Branding team. In over two years in this role, Stephen was responsible for designing and developing national campus recruiting programs including the Ace the Case Competition and Fast Forward Leadership Conference among many others.

 

Since 2011, Stephen has been in the role of Talent Attraction Manager for GTA Campus Recruiting and has enjoyed the new challenge of being more involved on campuses and in the recruiting efforts of the GTA offices.

Mary Freitas joined the KPMG team in October 2010 after completing her Honours Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. Mary began her career in the Toronto Audit practice as part of the Financial Institutions audit group where she has worked on clients in various industries including banking, broker/dealers, and funds. She has also had the opportunity to work in several of KPMG's other groups including energy, mining, and private clients.

 

Mary wrote and passed the UFE in September 2011 and is acting as a UFE mentor for one of this year's writers through KPMG's Study Buddy program as well as a marker for KPMG's internal marking pool. While working with KPMG, Mary has been actively involved with recruiting and has most recently accepted a short-term secondment in Campus Recruiting as a Talent Attraction Specialist.

 

Outside of work, Mary enjoys baking, reading, and travelling to new places.

Pankita Patel joined the KPMG team as a summer intern in 2007 and started full-time in September 2008 with the Enterprise Audit practice, where she specialized in working with non-for-profit organizations and municipalities. Pankita graduated from York University in 2008 with a BBA from the Schulich School of Business. Pankita has worked with a variety of non-for-profit organizations, municipalities, and real estate companies since joining the firm.

 

Pankita has been actively involved in recruiting since joining KPMG as a summer intern where she was a campus ambassador and after two years in the audit practice in September 2010 Pankita took on a new role in the Talent Attraction Group as a Talent Attraction Specialist, Campus Recruiting.

 

Since beginning her career at KPMG, Pankita has had the opportunity to be involved with the UFE process through KPMG's Study Buddy program, allowing her to mentor CA students through their CA exams as well as being a professional marker and seminar leader for the SOA since passing the UFE in 2009. For the past three years, Pankita has also had the opportunity to give back to her university through being a TA at Schulich School of Business for first and third year students.

 

Through this opportunity, Pankita has been able to keep her passion of teaching and be an active member of the Schulich alumni. Recently in 2012, Pankita joined the Ontario UFE group's internal marking centre and has been actively involved in facilitating CKE and SOA technical sessions.

 

Pankita is an active participant in KPMG's community initiatives as a key member on the Free the Children steering committee who works to raise internal firm awareness and organize events in support of the organization. In 2012, Pankita took on a new role as the Team Champion for the Talent Attraction Group to support the KPMG GTA World Partnership Walk Team. Outside of work, Pankita enjoys hot yoga, travelling, and baking!

Rory MacPherson joined KPMG's campus recruiting team in March of 2012. Prior to KPMG Rory worked in campus recruiting for a global reinsurance firm where he assisted in recruiting actuarial science students. Rory's interest in campus recruiting began while working in Vancouver, BC for one of Canada's Big 5 Banks, and decided to move to Toronto for an opportunity to gain experience in the industry. Rory's main goal since joining the GTA team is striving to provide all campus candidates with the best possible recruitment experience.

 

Despite Rory being new to KPMG, he has enjoyed getting involved with local campus events and planning activities for KPMG's interns and co-ops. Rory's most memorable moment so far has been attending a community leadership workshop that Free the Children facilitated for the KPMG 2012 Summer Interns.

 

In his spare time Rory enjoys traveling, cycling, volunteering, and learning how to cook!

Prior to joining KPMG, Julia held recruitment roles at the University of Guelph and, more recently, with the Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Julia holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Human Resources Management Degree, and is a board member with the Hamilton Chapter of the Human Resources Professional Association (HRPA).

Junaid Alam joined the firm in 2010 within the Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate practice. He focuses on the real estate arm of Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate practice. He attended the Ted Roger's School of Management's BComm program at Ryerson University before joining the firm. In his short tenure at KPMG, he has also worked on a variety of engagements pertaining to transactions (IPOs and offering memoranda), insurance, funds, consumer markets and banking.

 

Outside of engagements, Junaid is involved in KPMG's UFE program, campus recruiting and various KPMG volunteer initiatives. He is a UFE coordinator in addition to being a UFE mentor. He enjoys helping the campus recruiting team by representing KPMG at recruiting events and mentoring summer interns.

 

When not at work, Junaid enjoys playing ball hockey, reading about history and current affairs and watching standup comedy. He is also the Co-Chair of RCG Insight's, a Ryerson University student organization's alumni association.

Samir Kabbani joined the KPMG team as a summer intern in 2006 and started full-time in September 2007 with the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications practice, where he focused on working with public and private companies. Samir graduated from Ryerson University in 2007 with a BComm from the Ted Rogers School of Business.

 

Since beginning his career at KPMG, Samir has had the opportunity to be involved with the UFE process through KPMG's Study Buddy program, allowing him to mentor CA students through their CA exams as well as being a professional marker at the SOA and the UFE. Samir has also had the opportunity to demonstrate his leadership skills by becoming an e-Audit champion for his group as well as facilitating the Audit I fundamentals, a 5-day course provided to all first year accountants.

 

Outside of work, Samir volunteers for World Vision Canada. Samir also enjoys golfing and is a big football fan.

Fareena Khan joined the KPMG team as a summer intern in 2010 and started full time in October 2011 with the Energy & Natural Resources Group (ENR) group, where she is currently specializing in working with energy clients. Fareena graduated from the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University, with a major in Accounting and a minor in Finance.

 

Fareena has been actively involved in recruiting since joining KPMG where she was a campus ambassador in 2011. She has been able to share her experiences with candidates and discuss the many benefits and career opportunities at KPMG.

Christina Basanti began her career with KPMG as a summer intern in 2006. After graduating from UOIT with a BComm, Christina joined KPMG Enterprise's Audit practice in 2007 where she worked on private clients in various industry groups including real estate, manufacturing and not-for-profits. After four years in the KPMG Enterprise practice, Christina joined the Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate practice.

 

Over the past few years, Christina has been actively involved with campus recruiting and has volunteered her time towards many community initiatives with organizations including the United Way, Youth In Motion and Free The Children. In the summer of 2011, Christina joined the Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate practice.

 

Christina has lived in the United States, Africa and Australia and has travelled a great deal throughout Europe. In her personal time she enjoys tennis, yoga, travelling and shopping.

 

Henrik Andersen

Henrik Andersen joined the KPMG team full time in October 2010 with the Energy & Natural Resources Group (ENR)Audit practice, where he has mainly focused on mining clients. Henrik graduated from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in 2010 with a Honours Bachelor of Commerce. Prior to attending UOIT, Henrik attended the University of Toronto for chemical engineering. Henrik has worked with numerous junior mining and production mining companies since joining the firm utilizing the knowledge gained from engineering to put to practical use as an accountant.

 

Henrik is actively involved in two community events on an ongoing basis. Each year in November, Henrik grows a Mustache for Movember in support of raising awareness for the prevention and encouragement for men to receive regular check-ups for prostate cancer. As well, each September, Henrik runs a campaign for the Alzheimer's Society to raise money for Alzheimer's research and awareness.

 

Outside of work, Henrik enjoys wakeboarding, spending time with his family at the cottage, tennis and snowboarding.

Taryne Haight joined the KPMG team as a full time staff accountant in 2010 with the Consumer and Industrial Markets Audit practice. Taryne graduated from University of Ontario Institute of Technology in 2010 with a Bachelor of Commerce. Taryne has had an opportunity to work on all types of clients within her practice, while focusing on mining companies since joining the firm.

 

Since beginning her career at KPMG, Taryne has had the opportunity to be involved with the UFE process through KPMG's Mentoring program, allowing her to mentor a CA student through their CA exams since passing the UFE in 2011.

 

During this prior November, Taryne acted as a United Way Champion in her Audit practice to help raise funds and awareness for the United Way Campaign helping her practice obtain one of the higher participation rates in the GTA.

 

While working at KPMG, Taryne has had the opportunity to travel to many different client locations around the GTA as well as the United States. For one client engagement, there was even the chance to travel to China and Mongolia for a week.

 

Outside of work, Taryne enjoys travelling, scrapbooking, and snowboarding.

Amin has been actively involved as part of the UTM campus team since joining KPMG and is excited to be involved with Campus Recruiting this year. Through KPMG, Amin has had an opportunity to get involved in a variety of community projects including fund-raising for the Toronto Blue Jays' Jays Care Foundation, which helps empower youth in need by providing access to programs that support physical activity, education and life-skill development.

 

Outside of work, Amin likes exploring new places-to-eat, going to concerts and traveling when he can. To stay active and maintain work-life balance, Amin enjoys swimming, going to the gym and playing basketball and tennis.

Farhan Lodhi joined KPMG in 2011 as a full time staff accountant within the Financial Services Audit practice. His primary focus is working on the bank audits. Farhan graduated from University of Toronto Mississauga after completing the Accounting Specialist BComm program in three years. He has worked on the large and mid-size bank audits, funds, pensions and bank subsidiary audits since joining the financial services practice.

 

Since joining the firm, Farhan has actively been involved with recruiting and is excited to be part of the official UTM campus recruiting team for this year. He is part of the Financial Service Social Committee and is involved in organizing social events for KPMG alumni, UFE writers and the entire financial services group. He has been involved with several community initiatives at KPMG such as MOvember, the Vital Impact Program and The Citizens Foundation. Farhan was heavily involved with the Undergraduate Commerce Society as the Vice President of External Affairs and Department of Management while studying at UTM and looks forward to building strong relationships with students and staff as a UTM Alumni. He is currently pursuing his CA designation as part of the KPMG UFE program.

 

Farhan is originally from Montreal and is fluent in French, English and Urdu. He was part of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Rowing team for two years and enjoys being active by running, playing beach volleyball and lifting weights. Farhan is passionate about community leadership at KPMG and travelling around the world. He also played the cello for six years and his favorite classical music artist is Yo Yo Ma. Rick is a partner at KPMG LLP. Rick joined KPMG in 1978 and was made a partner in 1989. Rick is the National Risk Management Partner, Advisory Services and a member of KPMG's Global Risk Advisory Group. He also chairs the Community Leader Impact Committee for the GTA office of KPMG.

 

Prior to his current leadership positions, Rick had over 25 years of professional experience focusing on mergers and acquisition, valuations and insolvency engagements.

 

Rick is deeply committed to his community within and outside his profession. He has received his FCA (Fellowship) in recognition of continuous and meritorious service, including as Chair of several library boards, including the amalgamated City of Toronto Public Library Board. Rick is passionate about City building and has provided leadership in the collaboration between KPMG and Toronto Community Foundation (TCF). He recently has joined the board of TCF.

Nick Kaplan joined KPMG as a co-op student in January 2009 and started full-time in October 2010 following his completion of the UFE. Nick has been part of the Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate practice since joining the firm, and focuses primarily on the banking industry as well as funds. Nick completed his undergrad in 2008 from McGill University with a BA in Economics, and completed his Masters in Management and Professional Accounting from the University of Toronto in 2010.

 

Nick is currently actively involved within the Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate group, including organizing the annual Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate Golf Day as a member of the social committee, along with volunteering in 2011 and 2012 as a UFE mentor. In addition, Nick has been regularly involved with Campus Recruiting, and has participated in KPMG's Movember campaign for the past two years.

 

Outside the halls of KPMG, Nick remains active by playing hockey, golf, squash, captaining his summer softball team, and has recently tried his hand at yoga (with limited success). He has also made two separate trips around continental Europe, as well as travelled around Israel.

Pamela Ritchie joined KPMG as a co-op student in January 2011 and returned full-time in October 2011. During her time with the Enterprise Group Pamela has worked with clients in various industries including government, education and manufacturing. Pamela graduated from the University of Guelph in 2010 and went on to complete the MMPA program at the University of Toronto.

 

Upon returning full-time to the firm Pamela joined the Social Committee and has helped in planning social events for the Enterprise group over the last year. Pamela also participates as a UFE mentor to support current writers through the UFE program and provides additional marking support to the KPMG candidates through the internal marking system.

 

Outside of work Pamela enjoys reading and travel. Some recent travel destinations have included California, Florida, Germany and Austria.

 

 

Maximilian Smith

Max Smith

 

Maximilian Smith joined KPMG as a Master of Management and Professional Accounting (MMPA) co-op in 2010 and started full-time in September 2011 with the Financial Institutions and Real Estate group (FIRE). Max specializes in working with insurance companies. Max graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2008 with a BA in economics and finance and he graduated from the MMPA in 2011.  Max previously worked at DTZ Barnicke in the commercial real estate field.

 

Maximilian has been involved in KPMG's UFE process through KPMG's Study Buddy program since 2011. This involved being a mentor to fellow KPMG CA students through their CA exams. Max has also had the opportunity to work out in Calgary for the month of February 2012 where he gained exposure to oil and gas companies.

 

Outside of the working environment, Max has been involved in volunteer activities with The Yonge Street Mission. In addition, Max enjoys golf, fishing, basketball and football.

Shaun Smith joined the KPMG team as a co-op student in January 2010 and started full-time in September 2011 with the Technology, Media & Telecommunications Audit practice, where he works primarily with major Canadian telecoms and international software developers. Shaun graduated from Queen's University in 2009 with an HBA in Economics and from the University of Toronto in 2011 with an MMPA.

 

Shaun has enjoyed the diverse range of volunteer activities he has taken part in while working at KPMG through the Community Leader program. Shaun has had the opportunity to work with the Yonge Street Mission, Toronto's Daily Bread Foodbank, and as a United Way volunteer at a number of fundraising events throughout his co-ops and since beginning full-time in 2011.

 

Shaun took full advantage of KPMG's stellar UFE preparatory program and successfully passed the CKE, SOA, and UFE during 2011. During 2012, Shaun has taken an active role in the KPMG UFE Mentor program to support the new staff as they make their way through the UFE program. Shaun looks forward to celebrating the successes of KPMG's successful 2012 UFE Candidates.

 

Shaun's favourite part of the year is the summer and he tries to escape to cottage country whenever possible during cottage season. When not lying on a beach in Northern Ontario, Shaun enjoys golfing, playing rec league beach volleyball, and going to the movies with friends.

Outside of work, Preeti loves to play sports, including beach volleyball, and softball. She dances recreationally and competitively (hip hop, latin, and belly dance), and plays the guitar and trumpet. She also enjoys volunteering at the local library, reading and cooking in her spare time.

Asma Hasan joined KPMG in September 2005 in the Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) Audit group, where she spent three years before moving to KPMG's TMT Tax practice. Asma currently works on both large Canadian Corporate tax clients and Canadian personal tax clients. Asma graduated from York University with a BAS double major in Accounting and Information Technology (IT), passed the UFE in September 2006, and obtained her CA designation in June 2008.

 

Since joining KPMG, Asma has been involved in non-client services, such as being an executive member of the KPMG Diversity club the 'Salaam Network', and a member of KPMG's Partner for Life Canadian Blood Services Team. Before starting work at KPMG in Toronto, Asma had the opportunity to do a summer internship at KPMG in Dubai, which was an amazing experience. Asma has also been involved in the Tax recruiting process over the last two years. In her personal time Asma loves to travel and has visited a number of countries in Europe and Asia. She also loves to cook and is addicted to the Food Network.

Ayesha Younus

 

Ayesha joined the firm in 2007 after obtaining her Bachelor of Administrative Studied with an Honours Accounting from York University - Atkinson Faculty. Ayesha started her career in the Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate and is still part of the same audit group. Her primary focus is the Real Estate industry. Ayesha obtained her Chartered Accountancy in 2009.

 

Over the years, Ayesha has contributed to the UFE program by being a mentor to the UFE writers. She is also a representative of the Women Interchange Network which aims to provide growth and development opportunities to women within the firm. She was also instrumental in organizing KPMG's inter-faith event based on the tradition of fasting in the three Abrahamic faiths and invited the relevant religious leaders as the speakers. Ayesha is also involved in the campus recruitment.

 

While working at KPMG, Ayesha has used her baking skills to win first place in the annual Financial Services and Building, Construction and Real Estate bake off competition. In her personal time, Ayesha enjoys reading books on Islamic history, travelling and volunteering.

Sukhanpreet Dhanotta

 

Sukhanpreet Dhanotta joined the KPMG team full-time in September 2009 with the KPMG Enterprise's Audit practice, where she focused on working with non-for-profit organizations and manufacturing companies. Sukhanpreet graduated from York University in 2007 with a BAS Honors in Accounting from Atkinson. Sukhanpreet has worked with a variety of not-for-profit organizations, manufacturing and retail businesses since joining the firm.

 

Since beginning her career at KPMG, Sukhanpreet has had the opportunity to be involved with the UFE process through KPMG's Study Buddy program, allowing her to mentor CA students through their CA exams. Sukhanpreet has been part of the recruiting team since she started her career with KPMG. Sukhanpreet is an active participant in KPMG's Winter Survival Project since 2010.

 

Sukhanpreet has been an active volunteer at Meals on Wheels since 2008. Outside of work, Sukhanpreet enjoys salsa dance, makeup artistry and baking.

Noor Shahad

 

Shahad Noor joined the KPMG team full-time in October 2011 with the Technology, Media, and Telecommunications practice. Shahad graduated from York University in 2010 with a BAS from the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies - Specialized Honors in Accounting.

 

Since beginning her career at KPMG, Shahad has passed the CKE, and is looking forward to completing the UFE process. She has worked on variety of clients in the technology industry, and is looking forward for another busy season.

 

Shahad is an active participant in KPMG's community initiatives and participated in the World Partnership Walk 2012. Outside of work, Shahad enjoys hot yoga, travelling, and shopping.
