The issues that impact our communities are the same issues that impact our people and their families, our clients, and our operations. So making a commitment to having a positive impact is how we recognize the significance of our relationship with the communities where we operate and live.
Being actively engaged in our communities has always been an important part of KPMG’s culture. One of our long-standing core values is “We are committed to our communities.”
In 2009, we elevated our existing engagement to a whole new level by incorporating Community Leadership as one of the four key components of our overall business strategy.
KPMG’s Community Leader strategy has three key components; each of these components has specific accountabilities that KPMG and our people will commit to:
Strategic engagement in our communities to make a difference
Strategic engagement is about how we leverage our skills, knowledge, passion, and financial resources to create and contribute to positive social change in our communities. Our Community Leader strategy is decentralized to allow us to focus our efforts directly into our local communities and have a real impact on the key challenges in each community where we are located.
We will do this by engaging with each of our communities at a grassroots level, so that we can identify the most pressing issues and then take actions that respond to them by using our skills and our collective commitment to action to make a difference.
Supporting the passions of KPMG people
We are committed to supporting all KPMG people to pursue their personal passions in the community. At KPMG, we empower all of our people to engage with organizations or causes that are meaningful to them in a way that is personally appropriate for them.
We will do this by supporting our people with skills development, opportunities for engagement, encouragement, and mentorship, so they can be effective leaders in their communities and personally make a difference. KPMG currently supports its people in their engagement by providing them with time off to volunteer, and we will continue looking for opportunities to expand our contributions to the development of our people as well as our local communities.
Sustainability for KPMG is about taking a holistic view of the impact of the decisions we make, and how our operations can reflect a shift towards a more respectful and judicious use of resources. As a national firm with over 5,000 people, when we all do more or less of something, we have an impact. We have had a formal national strategy to reduce our environmental footprint since 2007, and KPMG International was the first of the Big 4 accounting firms to launch a global ambition to reduce global carbon footprint by 25 percent by 2010—from a 2007 baseline.
We will do this by combining a focus on reducing our environmental footprint through identifying and implementing new and different ways to operate in order to be sensitive and responsible in how we impact and interact with our global community—the planet.
We believe that our Community Leader strategy offers us the opportunity to be change agents in a variety of ways. By placing the accountability for the success of our Community Leader strategy directly with our senior leadership, we are making it clear that the commitment to taking action will cascade to every area of the firm. Our strategy has a role for every KPMG person at every level of our business, and we will assist and encourage our people to participate in our communities in ways that help engage their own passions.
Ultimately, the foundation of KPMG’s Community Leader strategy is the desire to be impactful. We define success as a multi-faceted accomplishment, and we will not consider ourselves truly successful unless we can inspire the passions of our people and direct the output of that passion into making our communities better. We truly believe that we can be known as “the firm that makes a difference,” and we are committed to achieving that objective.
