(Toronto – June 24th, 2010) – KPMG International’s Global Infrastructure practice, in conjunction with Infrastructure Journal, has announced the Infrastructure 100—a showcase of the most interesting infrastructure projects from around the world.
Infrastructure Journal and KPMG International compiled the 100 list by drawing in hundreds of exceptional nominations from people who share a passion for infrastructure. Of the 100, 10 projects were highlighted by the independent judging panels as notable projects in different infrastructure sectors.
The 10 Canadian projects selected for their scale, complexity, innovation, and impact on society are as follows:
- The Bridgepoint Hospital P3 in Toronto
- Canada Line Rapid Transit in Vancouver
- Centre de Recherche Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM) P3 in Montréal
- EEEL Building in Calgary
- Alberta Schools Alternative Procurement (ASAP) New Schools
- Keystone Oil Pipeline Extension – Canada/USA
- Windsor-Essex Parkway/Detroit River Int. Crossing – Canada/USA
- Cape Wind, Hydro One Smart Grid and the Ontario Wind & Solar Clusters in Ontario.
“Infrastructure is vital to long-term economic growth, and Canada has demonstrated its ability to consistently churn out exceptional projects in various sectors,” said Stephen Beatty, Partner and Americas Leader for Global Infrastructure, KPMG. “Through these projects, Canadian entrepreneurs have focused on delivering the needs of our communities for sustainable growth in the long term.”
Of the 10 shortlisted projects, CRCHUM P3 project in Montréal, for example, will bring medical specialties, teaching, and research facilities under one roof in a modern state-of- the-art facility. The construction phase will consist of a 15-storey research and training facility being built over 40 months, bringing together over 1,000 academics and health professionals to conduct groundbreaking research activities.
Furthermore, the Energy Environment Experiential Learning (EEEL) building on the University of Calgary campus is another proposed project. Once built, it will use the illumination design to allow for the maximum amount of natural light to reach within the building’s hub while dramatically improving energy efficiency.
“Canadian entrepreneurs have designed 10 exemplary projects in various sectors,” said Beatty. “This will pave the way for future generations of Canadians to be inspired to come up with world-class ideas.”
