TORONTO, September 30, 2013 – On Saturday, September 28, KPMG announced a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt for the largest street hockey tournament. Hockey Night in Canada’s 2013 Play On! Street Hockey Tournament saw a total of 5,360 teams participate, with over 30,000 players, in 21 cities from coast-to-coast.
The current GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the Largest Street Hockey Tournament is from 2010 and stands at 205 teams. During Saturday’s Play On! Redwood Cup National Championships in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, KPMG officially reported that 5,360 teams collectively contributed to this year’s record-breaking attempt.
“This tournament provides communities across Canada with a truly unique hockey experience,” said John Gordon, Canadian Managing Partner, Audit, KPMG. “KPMG is proud to be a part of this event that supports Canada’s love of the game.”
KPMG professionals across the country volunteered their time to provide an independent review of the registration results. Representatives were on-site at each and every tournament location over a nine week period throughout May and June, verifying the number of teams registered and confirming the registration process.
