Canada Enacts More International Treaties

Global Tax Adviser

June 25, 2013

Bill S-17, which implements four tax treaties that Canada has concluded with Namibia, Serbia, Poland and Hong Kong, received Royal Assent on June 19, 2013. The bill also implements amendments to provisions for the exchange of tax information found in the tax treaties that Canada has concluded with Luxembourg and Switzerland.

As the bill has received Royal Assent, Canada can now notify each country that it has completed its procedures required to bring the relevant treaty into force in Canada. The protocols will come into effect on a country-by-country basis once they are ratified by the other country and the two countries notify each other that their procedures are complete.
