Workshop goals
Exchange of experience between highly specialised experts from TSOs, focusing on forecasting issues.
Topics
A. Solar generation forecasting:
- Weather forecast variables that should be used – cloudiness or radiation forecasts?
- Benefits of regional resolution of forecasts versus global forecast and bottom-up approach versus top-down approach.
- Benefits of combined weather forecasts from various sources and providers.
- What accuracy can be achieved with different forecasting horizons?
B. Load forecasting for systems with large embedded RES generation:
- The effect of growing embedded RES generation on overall accuracy of load forecasts.
- Optimal forecasting methods in case of large embedded RES generation.
- Separation of consumption and embedded generation data.
C. Secure integration of renewable energy sources, from the TSO perspective:
- Day-ahead congestion forecast.
- Cross-border issues, nuclear phase-out and RES generation growth in Europe.
- Mid-term forecasts and ancillary services availability issues.
D. Growing importance of intra-day forecasts:
- Achieved accuracy improvements on intra-day forecasting horizons.
- Usage of intra-day forecasts.
- Growing liquidity of intra-day markets in relation to the growing share of RES generation.
E. Solar boom in the Czech Republic: what have we observed as the installed capacity grew from 0 to 2000 MWp within the last two years – expectations versus reality and lessons learned:
- State policy and the resulting growth of installed capacity of photovoltaic generation over the last two years.
- Expectations related to the accuracy of day-ahead solar generation forecasts, volatility and prices of imbalances and traded volumes, and prices on day-ahead and intra-day markets.
- Achieved results and comparison between the years 2010 and 2011.
F. Other general issues related to long-term and short-term load forecasting, RES generation forecasting and system imbalance forecasting.
G. Presentation of forecasting tools, methodologies, and solutions developed by the forecasting division of Itron, the leading company in this area in the U.S.
