Sowers Action is a non-profit organisation that helps children in China's poorer regions acquire basic education by giving them the opportunity to learn and study in a safe environment. They have an excellent track record - all 114 schools they previously built in the earthquake-affected areas withstood the force of the quake and reported no casualties.
On 12 November 2008, KPMG China signed an agreement to contribute CNY 1.98 million to Sowers Action to rebuild Gao Qiao Primary School and Zhang Qi Primary School in Cheng County, Gansu province, which were damaged by the 5/12 earthquake. The construction of the schools started in July 2009 and was completed in February 2010. In May 2010, representatives from KPMG's various offices in China attended the opening ceremonies of the two schools in Gansu, KPMG Zhang Qi Hope Primary School and KPMG Gao Qiao Hope Primary School. With improved buildings and facilities, the schools now directly benefit over 500 children.
Till June 2012, a total of 60 volunteers from KPMG China have visited the two KPMG schools in Gansu. The aim of these missions is to unleash the students’ potential and teach them knowledge and skills not included in their day-to-day school curricula, such as environmental protection, sustainability and economics. The students also benefit from mentoring by KPMG staff, which inspires them to pursue their dreams. The missions have been very successful, proving extremely popular with both the students and the KPMG volunteers.
Through a partnership with Sowers Action, another KPMG sponsored school, the Fang Niu Chang Primary School in Yunnan was rebuilt and put in use in September 2010. By the end of June 2012, a total of 54 KPMG staff had joined the volunteer missions to Fang Niu Chang Primary School, we will organise volunteers for another mission in September 2012.
