China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA)

CFPA is a non-profit organisation established in 1989 to help address poverty issues in China. The CFPA’s mission is to help people and communities in poor areas improve their production, living and health conditions, shake off poverty, and realise sustainable development. In 2002, the CFPA formed the New Great Wall project,

enabling impoverished students to complete their university studies. After the Sichuan earthquake, the CFPA played a substantial role in providing immediate relief to the victims and is closely involved in long-term recovery efforts.

At KPMG China we began supporting the New Great Wall Project in 2005 through our Beijing office. In 2007, we expanded our support to make it a nationwide CSR initiative and contributed RMB 700,000 to sponsor 350 students in 28 universities, including all cities where KPMG operates in mainland China. In 2008, we sponsored an additional 80 students who were affected by the Sichuan earthquake. To date, we have sponsored 540 underprivileged university students from 44 universities in 20 cities across China.

In addition to the firm’s financial support, staff from the KPMG China offices also offer their time and experience to students through correspondence, mentorship and joint community projects. Our people’s interaction and support helps the students build their self-confidence and develop communication skills, while also expanding their social circles.

In the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake, KPMG China donated RMB 4 million to the CFPA for immediate relief. The CFPA used half of this donation to purchase emergency items and equipment in order to help affected farmers in Mao county to harvest Sichuan peppercorn. The remaining RMB 2 million was spent on building 156 temporary houses in Wolong.
