Building a community centre in Pengzhou, Sichuan KPMG China worked with the China Children and Teenagers' Fund (CCTF) to build a community centre in Cifeng township, Pengzhou, Sichuan. The center's design won the "2009 National Human Settlement Best Practice Gold Medal". It is also being showcased as an example of best practice for sustainable living and environmental protection at the ZED pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo, due to its distinct energy-saving and environmental features. It is expected to serve as an exemplary site for green building, renewable energy and resources, and quake-resistant technology. It was built with environmentally friendly and locally sourced materials, such as processed bamboo. This hopefully set new benchmarks for construction techniques in rural China. Another highlight is the bringing together of different businesses on this project. For example, Integer China and I&G Systems have provided pro-bono design and construction consultation services. The bamboo floor, straw bale wall, energy-saving timber window, solar lighting system and other features are also being provided by several companies on a pro-bono and complimentary basis. The centre brings people together for a variety of community gatherings, including after-school activities for children and vocational skills training, with our people playing an active role. The centre was opened in May 2010.

Rebuilding two schools in Cheng County, Gansu In November 2008, KPMG China entered into an agreement with Sowers Action (SA) to rebuild two schools in Cheng county, Gansu province. The construction started in July 2009 and completed in spring 2010. Where around 500 students started to study in these two newly built schools in May 2010. SA has an excellent record - all the 114 schools they previously built in the earthquake-affected areas withstood the force of the quake and reported no casualties.
