Global Green Initiative

With our global goal to reduce our footprint by 25 percent in 2010 from a 2007 baseline, we have completed our internal carbon emission assessment for the calendar years 2007 and 2008.

For KPMG China, the 2007 carbon audit covered 16 office buildings throughout 11 locations in China. Our findings showed that our overall green house gas emissions totalled 15,114 metric tonnes of CO2-equivalent, while emissions per staff member totalled 2.374 metric tonnes of CO2-equivalent.

The KPMG China 2008 carbon emission assessment was completed at the end of July 2009, based on the calculation sources from 2007.  We conducted the internal audit ourselves by following the scope of the KPMG international guidelines.  The assessment showed that our overall green house gas emissions totalled 16,407 metric tonnes of CO2-equivalent or 2.159 metric tonnes of CO2-equivalent per staff member.

Although our overall emissions rose 8.5 percent compared with 2007, mainly due to the firm's growth and increased number of employees, the good news is that we were still able to achieve an astounding emissions reduction of 9.1 percent per staff member compared with 2007 baseline.

We have reduced our energy consumption through a variety of means, such as providing environmental tips and advice for staff, replacing paper cups with ceramic mugs, installing double-sided printers and recycling bins, purchasing hybrid company cars, and using LED lights in newly renovated areas. To reduce business travel, we have installed Halo video conferencing facilities in our Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai offices and have added a video conferencing function to all partners' and directors' computers. We are also in the process of developing a carbon emission reduction guideline and will conduct a bi-annual assessment for all China offices.

In the beginning of 2009, KPMG International selected one employee from the US firm and one from the China firm to join renowned polar explorer, Robert Swan, on his expedition to Antarctica from 14-27 March 2009.
These two ambassadors witnessed at first-hand the impact of climate change on Antarctica's fragile ecosystems and wildlife and shared their experiences with us. For more information and updates, please click here .

We also supported the "Earth Hour" organised by WWF, a global campaign calling for climate change solutions and a commitment to combating global warming. As a corporate participant, all lights in our office buildings in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong were turned off from 8:30 to 9:30 pm on Saturday, 28 March 2009.
