Sowers Action is a non-profit organisation that helps children in China's poorer regions acquire basic education by giving them the opportunity to learn and study in a safe environment. They have an excellent track record - all 114 schools they previously built in the earthquake-affected areas withstood the force of the quake and reported no casualties. |
On 12 November 2008, KPMG China signed an agreement to contribute CNY 1.98 million to Sowers Action to rebuild Gao Qiao Primary School and Zhang Qi Primary School in Cheng County, Gansu province, which were damaged by the 5/12 earthquake. The construction of the schools started in July 2009 and was completed in February 2010. In May 2010, representatives from KPMG's various offices in China attended the opening ceremonies of the two schools in Gansu, KPMG Zhang Qi Hope Primary School and KPMG Gao Qiao Hope Primary School. With improved buildings and facilities, the schools now directly benefit over 500 children.
Since 2010, a total of 43 volunteers from KPMG China visited the two KPMG schools in Gansu. The aim of these missions is to broaden the students horizon and to teach them other knowledges and skills that are not included in their day-to-day school curriculums. The students also benefit from the mentorships from KPMG staff and in many cases inspires them to dream big. They taught the students about environmental protection, sustainability and economics. In the other recent volunteer missions in May and October, 28 volunteers from KPMG China carried out the same series of lessons for students at another KPMG sponsored school, the KPMG Fang Niu Chang Hope Primary School in Yunnan. The missions were very successful and were well received by the students and the KPMG volunteers.
