Preparing for the Interview
1. Research the firm
- Learn more about the interview process including: date and location of the interview, length of the interview, the person you will be meeting with, any special instructions, and the interviewer’s expectations
- Spend time assessing the organization through various channels including visiting the Campus Website, talking to Campus Ambassadors, pre-interview social events, and networking with individuals who have had contact with the firm
2. A Day in the Life of a KPMG Professional: Take a Sneak Peek at Your Role at KPMG
- Once you have been selected for an interview, you now have the opportunity to preview the role before you even meet your interviewer. This year, KPMG is introducing into the hiring process, the Day in the Life of a KPMG Professional -- a realistic job preview which can be experienced online wherever you have an internet connection.
- What's in it for you? A Day in the Life of a KPMG Professional provides valuable insights into the KPMG's work environment, culture and people. It offers you an opportunity to demonstrate your strengths, while at the same time gaining valuable insights into the role that you are applying to. This experience will help you prepare for your interview and gives you an understanding of whether KPMG is the right fit for you.
- What will you experience? As you navigate through A Day in the Life of a KPMG Professional, you will be asked to respond to real work situations as well as describe your approach to work and what motivates you. The entire process takes about an hour. Once completed, you should be able to walk into the interview with a clear idea of what to expect from your career at KPMG.
3. Do Your Self Assessment
- Evaluate your strengths, weaknesses, skills, interests, values and goals, as this will help build your confidence and help you articulate the value you will bring to a position during an interview
- Identify the top three skills or experiences that you can bring to the firm that other students can’t, and practice how you will communicate them to a recruiter
4. Develop Some Intelligent Questions
- During the interview you will be asked whether you have any questions, so ensure you develop a few ahead of time, as this can demonstrate your level of interest in the job
- Develop questions that you are truly interested in and listen to the responses to learn about the firm and the job’s challenges
- If you have interviews back-to-back, be sure to ask questions to both interviewers
5. Some Useful Tips
- First impressions count so dress appropriately for the interview, generally this means business professional dress
- Make sure to get a good night’s sleep before your interview and ensure you leave yourself enough time to get ready and arrive with time to spare
- Prepare for the interview by practicing with a friend, reviewing your experience and its relevance to the position, and bringing two or three prepared questions with you to the interview
- Know what to expect including the name of those you will be meeting, possible length of the interview, and the exact location of the interview

6. Make a Good First Impression
- The initial impression you make on other can last for a long time, and it is important that you present the type of image you would like to portray going forward. Dress professionally, speak clearly, and appear confident when meeting with the interviewer
- Nonverbal communication is very important. Make eye contact, sit up straight, make sure you use a firm handshake, and don’t forget to smile
7. During the Interview
- When answering the interview questions provide specific examples that support any claims you make
- The interview should be a two-way conversation, keep your answers brief, ask for clarification if you don’t understand, and provide answers that demonstrate your skills, passion, and understanding of the position for which you are applying
8. Closing the Interview
- When you close the interview you want to leave the interviewer with the right impression of you. Remember to: state your interest in the position, ask about the next step in the process, and be yourself
