IT was the industry which performed the largest number of mergers and acquisitions in 2011 in Brazil, and led the ranking for the 4th. consecutive year. Considering last year alone, 90 deals involving companies from the segment were made, an increase of 5.5% in relation to the prior year. These data are included in a survey carried out by KPMG on a quarterly basis, which identifies the 42 areas which most performed transactions in the country.
The IT industry has been recording a rising change in the number of mergers and acquisitions since 1999 and has sustained its leading position for four years, surpassing strong domestic sectors, such as Food and Drink, Real Estate and Oil & Gas. KPMG’s survey also pointed out that the IT local market was quite burgeoning in 2011. Forty-five transactions involving only Brazilian capital companies were performed during this period. Seventeen deals considering foreign companies acquiring Brazilian companies established in Brazil were also recorded, three Brazilian companies bought foreign companies abroad, two Brazilian companies acquired a foreign company established in the country and 23 foreign companies acquired other foreign companies established in the country.
According to the survey coordinator, the KPMG partner, Luis Motta, the IT industry contributed to the increase in the number of operations performed between Brazilian companies, which accounted for 50% of the year’s total deals.
