Urban infrastructure has become one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. Already, the world’s cities are home to more than half of the global population; emit more than 70 percent of the world’s greenhouse gasses; use 80 percent of the world’s energy; and drive the vast majority of the world’s economic output.

Difficult questions and complex considerations hold significant influence over the ability of governments to provide the improved public services and modern infrastructure that are required to support their burgeoning – and in some cases unrelenting – growth. Investment is an obvious challenge for governments, but critical questions also surround considerations such as policy development and tax, the need for greater accountability, the role of the private sector, and the drive for improved sustainability.
