The budgets for initiatives rise, but their success is not guaranteed. Despite increased importance of and experience in project and programme management, only a minority of them are delivered on time and within budget, while delivering the expected benefits.
On the other hand, the rate of success increases when project/programme management is applied in a structured way, a KPMG Advisory’s Project & Programme Management survey finds. This includes maturity in processes, particularly those related to business case, risk and benefits management, application of lessons learned etc. Organizations who manage to do so consistently achieve higher success rates in their project and programme outcomes.
Organizations undertake projects and programmes in order to achieve certain benefits. Yet half of them do not identify and follow up their benefits, and only a few do so on a regular basis. The survey further indicates that companies successfully making use of a benefits management process achieve a higher quality of outcomes and achievement of expected benefits.
KPMG IT Advisory provides an independent and critical assessment of the programme health at any point during its lifecycle, which can start at any time, but the sooner the better to avoid costly rework. The service can be provided as an integral part of a complete transformation or independently from it (the latter also permitted for KPMG audit clients).
The assessment may address some or all areas like governance and organization, PM processes, tools and techniques, quality of the deliverables, change management and the potential to realize expected business benefits. Throughout this assessment we check how the programme deals with the conflicting priorities of cost, risk, time and quality.
The IPA service can be performed as a:
- One-time health check – providing you an overall snapshot of the condition at any time of the lifecycle;
- Stage - exit – helps assess readiness of entering into a new stage;
- Periodic assessment (e.g. monthly) – provides a recurring check-up of status.
