Today’s public sector leaders face challenges on every front:
- how to deliver services for a lot less
- how to provide the services that the public wants
- how to motivate and skill up reducing pools of public service staff; and
- how to create a sustainable culture of bottom-up, fast paced and ambitious reform.
The fiscal pressure resulting from a combination of slower economic growth, ageing populations, smaller tax-paying workforces and rising community expectations has refocused attention on spending on public services. All the while, the question of how to implement long-term public service reform to bring about productivity improvements bubbles under the surface.
There is growing recognition that simply continuing to provide services in the same way will not achieve the step change required to protect public service provision for tomorrow.
