Joseph studied a Bachelor of Accounting at Monash University before starting at KPMG as a graduate in 2007.
As part of my degree I completed the Industry Based Learning Program and I was lucky enough to be placed with KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Choice Hotels Australia. What really made KPMG stand out was the atmosphere, it was enjoyable and fun. The team I work with are fantastic. They are great mentors and they are also people that I have developed great friendships with.
KPMG's Private Enterprise provides services to small to medium sized businesses. The services range from tax and accounting compliance to specific tax and business advice. As well as managing business compliance matters such as the preparation of income tax returns and financial statements, you are given opportunities to help businesses grow.
My week can vary a great deal which is probably the best aspect of working in the Private Enterprise practice. Most of my time is spent in the office, assisting various clients with the day-to-day aspects of their business. This has given me great insight into how businesses are run and has significantly broadened my technical skill set.
Over the last year, I have been seconded to a number of different clients to perform a range
of functions within their organisations. I have been a member of a finance team; I worked for a large investment company, helping them with their accounting system; a small winery in the Yarra Valley, helping them improve their bookkeeping function; and most recently an importer of chemicals, assisting them with the winding down and eventual deregistration of their Australian subsidiary.
Not only does KPMG have a fantastic atmosphere and great people to work with but the investment made in training is invaluable and whether you stay on to become a partner or move elsewhere you will be highly qualified to tackle any business issue that may arise.
My goals are to finish my CA next year, learn as much as possible and hopefully take up the opportunities KPMG offers to travel overseas. I hope to travel in the next couple of years using my knowledge and qualifications as well as KPMG’s great international network.
KPMG provides extensive training. As well as providing CA assistance training programs, there are many other elective courses that can be taken including effective business writing, managing work place priorities and even Microsoft Excel training.
