Andrew Mills appointed as Second Commissioner of Taxation

by Grant Wardell-Johnson, Australian Tax Centre

On 19 December 2013 the Assistant Treasurer, Senator the Hon Arthur Sinodinos AO, announced the appointment of Andrew Mills as a Second Commissioner of Taxation for a period of seven years.

The ATO is managed by a Commissioner of Taxation – Chris Jordan AO - and three Second Commissioners – Geoff Leeper, Neil Olesen and now Andrew Mills.

Andrew is in the fortunate position of having seen many sides of taxation.  He spent the first eight years of his career with the ATO and has had five years in commerce, initially at Capita and subsequently as Head of Tax at MLC with an interim period at Greenwoods & Freehills, which he subsequently rejoined.  He was Managing Director at G&F from 2006 to 2011.

Andrew was the 2006-7 President of the Tax Institute and has been an active member of multiple consultative processes over the years.

We believe that Andrew’s appointment represents another important step in the very positive direction tax administration is taking in Australia.

The year 2013 has been a year of change for taxation in Australia. It commenced with the appointment of Chris Jordan AO, has seen significant policy debate emanating from the May Budget, and a change of Government.
