Migration Newsflash: Living Away From Home benefits as reimbursement

Until now, many employers have found it advantageous to package LAFH as a reimbursement for the expatriate’s actual living costs rather than as a Living Away From Home Allowance (‘LAFHA’). Providing the LAFH benefit as a reimbursement can be a significantly lesser administrative burden for businesses.

Key insights

  • Living Away From Home (‘LAFH’) benefits provided as a reimbursement may be considered a part of an expatriate’s earnings
  • Employers that are providing LAFH benefits as reimbursements still need to ensure that expatriate’s earnings do not fluctuate below the level of their approved nomination.
