Opportunities and implications for policy

Business leaders clearly recognise that economic risks are intertwined with range of political, environmental, societal and technological issues.

Recognising these linkages presents an opportunity to move beyond traditional trade-off assumptions about economic efficiency versus social progress. It paves way for business to create shared value for all stakeholders and society at large, and for across-the-board productivity increases.

A growing school of thought argues that for company success to be reconnected with social progress, new frameworks are needed so that societal issues are at the core, not the periphery.

The opportunities and implications for policy were:

  • climate change and its consequences
  • concern about adverse global economic events and trends
  • underinvestment in infrastructure
  • inadequate research and development.
