Our Team

Globally, the healthcare sector is facing enormous, complex challenges around both development and maintenance. In Africa, the sector is undergoing major policy, system and infrastructural changes.

Sven Byl
“Healthcare is about people. It is an intimate relationship between people who are in need of care and those that are entrusted to provide it. It is the highest expression of humanity”. Learn more about Sven’s experience and expertise.

Sven Byl is head of KPMG in Africa’s Healthcare Practice. He is an expert in areas including performance improvement, strategic reconfiguration, commissioning, mergers and acquisitions and senior stakeholder management for healthcare and public sector clients.

He often works closely with clients to develop opportunities in health system collaboration, and implement new organisational strategies.

Although trained as a senior civil servant, he has never been one in his native country (Canada). Whilst on a two-year secondment to KPMG in the UK (London), Sven was appointed a senior civil servant at the UK Department of Health and National Health Service (NHS) leading the implementation of Academic Health Science Centres.

In this role, Sven developed a performance management framework for under-performing provider organisations. He was a senior contributor to a national report the Next Stage Review ‘High Quality Care for All’, a ten-year strategy to improve quality, innovation and productivity in NHS services.

Recently, Sven served as KPMG’s Global Executive Director (for the International network of KPMG) where he advised government officials, public and private providers and payers on healthcare reform, innovation, regulatory policy, quality and patient outcomes. He is a highly sought after advisor to payers and providers alike; his work has brought him to over 30 countries advising first-hand on health system reform, with a special emphasis on developing economies.

He admits he does not have a camera-ready face, yet is a frequent media commentator on health policy and industry trends.

Born in the Netherlands and raised abroad, today he lives in Johannesburg, South Africa with the delightful Mrs. Byl and a precocious three year old named Atticus. He is competitive sailor in the international J105 class but since moving to landlocked Johannesburg, misses the sea.

Robert Brown
“I have worked with clients at both the delivery and strategic planning level where decisions shape local health systems. I have seen the impact of a disconnect between the ‘coal face’ and the Chief Exec and I am passionate about helping the leaders of health systems to develop strategy that will have a practical, tangible impact on the lives of patients; and about helping front-line staff to turn these strategies into better outcomes.” Learn more about Robert’s experience and expertise.

Since joining KPMG in South Africa from our Healthcare Advisory Team in the UK, Rob has been working closely on the National Health Insurance (NHI) agenda, helping a number of clients – including the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA) – develop their strategic responses to the Government’s policy proposals on NHI.

Prior to joining KPMG, Robert worked for the UK Department of Health, where he led the policy development of the financial failure regime for acute hospital providers.

Health system performance
Rob is currently working with the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health on a major project designed to identify and address the root causes of the long-standing and high-profile challenges the Department is facing in supply chain; finance, human resource management and strategic leadership

Rob managed a multi-disciplinary KPMG team supporting the Strategic Health Authority and the commissioners in the NW London Sector in redesigning the acute provider landscape in the sector to meet the future health needs of the population.

Clinical strategy
Robert recently worked with a £460m hospital provider in the UK to develop a five-year clinical strategy, responding to changes in the funding and policy environment both locally and nationally. Rob advised the board on the organisation’s future strategic direction, whilst working closely with general managers and clinicians to deliver the skills transfer that would ensure effective and sustainable implementation.

Acute provider turnaround
Robert was part of the multi-functional KPMG team supporting an NHS Foundation Hospital Trust develop a turnaround plan to address recurring deficits in excess of £10m p.a. The turnaround plan tackled systemic issues and inefficiencies in the organisation’s back office and the configuration of its services.

Robert developed and refined a new configuration for urgent care which would support an acute hospital provider in achieving financial balance when faced with an under-sized catchment population and political demands for a full range of services.

Health market analysis
Robert has worked on a number of market analysis projects in the health sectors in the UK and South Africa, including a number of new market opportunity assessments in both private and public sectors.

Rita Owino
“Even at a young age, I recognised the gaps and inequalities in our healthcare system and wanted to be involved in making it better. Images of sick children dying from preventable diseases, and images of women and men, young and old without access to medical care, were constant reminders of the inequalities. This is even more rewarding when you think this will have a tangible and direct effect in creating better living standards for millions of people in Africa.” Learn more about Andre’s experience and expertise.
